Kroehler Furniture Company History Timeline
Naperville Lounge Company was incorporated on March 9 by ten original stockholders. Peter E. Kroehler joined the company on April 3 as stenographer and general assistant.
After a principal shareholder died in summer 1895, Peter Kroehler bought out other investors at book value. In summer 1896, a new group of four partners, including Peter Kroehler, took over the business.
The company moved to a new headquarters along the C. B. & Q railroad tracks in Naperville, IL, with a two-story-and-basement frame structure measuring 30 x 100 feet.
On April 6, Peter Kroehler was made president of the company. Sears Roebuck & Company bought 50% of the company, with Peter Kroehler owning the other half.
A new plant was erected in Kankakee, Illinois, and began operations as P. E. Kroehler Mfg. Co.
The D. T Owen Company from Cleveland, Ohio was purchased. The Naperville plant was partly destroyed by the “Easter Cyclone,” and a new building was erected in its place.
On April 1, the name “Kroehler Manufacturing Company” was adopted to unify four factories operating under various names. Kroehler bought back Sears’ shares in the company for $1.2 million.
The Valentine-Seaver Company was purchased for $3.5 million.
Luce Furniture Shops of Grand Rapids was purchased, bringing dining room and bedroom furniture into the Kroehler catalog.
